KALYMNOS, THE PARADISE OF CLIMBING!
An island of rare natural beauty, Kalymnos is located in the southeast Aegean between Leros and Kos.
It is the fourth largest island of the Dodecanese with an area of 111 km² and a population of over 16,000.
Kalymnos is laved by the Cretan Sea in the south and Ikarian Sea in the west.
The interest that Kalymnos poses as far as climbing is concerned was discovered by chance in 1996 by an Italian climber during his vacations in the island.
The first 43 climbing routes were created in one year and a series of steps were taken for the development of the sport in the island.
Kalymnos, also known as the island of the sponge divers, has a long tradition and training experience in diving. Sponge extraction and sponge commerce used to be the main preoccupation of Kalymnians for centuries, diving being the basic method for extracting the sponges.
