The Kalymnos municipality and the Municipal Sports Organization of Kalymnos have seen to the regulation and maintenance of the first routes and to the development of new ones and taken several steps for the development of climbing in Kalymnos.
The Office for the Service and Information for Climbers was established, a complete climbing guide was published, websites were developed on the internet and today Kalymnos is considered one of the most beautiful and popular destinations for climbers all over the world.
The structure of the rocks as well as the exquisite quality of the limestone are some of the major advantages of the island concerning the sport. Others include the climate, which, being dry and mild, is ideal for the sport all year round, with autumn and spring, of course, being the most popular.
In the summer of 2005 Kalymnos already had 54 fully organized tracks, mainly of western and southern orientation with 850 open routes, all of them safely secured with hardware. The difficulty of the several routes ranges through all levels, from 4a for beginners to 8b for experts.
Furthermore, there is a great deal of landscapes yet to be discovered by anyone willing to open up new routes, always in line with the regulations and the procedure established, of course.
Location Access to the climbing tracks is very easy. Next to the only road of the island leading to Emporeios, there are signs with all the necessary information for the way and time to approach each track.
The Office for the Service and Information for Climbers is located in the area of Kastelli, just below Kalymnos’s most famous climbing track, Odysseia.
